Thomas Joiner (psychologist)

Thomas Joiner is a psychologist known for his research on the processes that lead to suicidal thoughts and behaviors. He developed the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide, which suggests that people are at higher risk when they feel both a sense of perceived burdensomeness, that they are a burden to others, and a lack of connectedness or belonging. According to Joiner, these feelings create a desire for death. However, acting on suicidal thoughts also requires a sense of acquired capability—developed through exposure to painful experiences—that overrides the natural fear of death. His work aims to improve prevention and intervention strategies.
