Thomas I, also known as Saint Thomas Becket, was the Archbishop of Canterbury in the 12th century. His main role was to oversee the Church's spiritual and administrative matters in England. His relationship with King Henry II became strained over the king's attempts to control church affairs. This conflict led to Thomas's martyrdom in 1170 when he was murdered in Canterbury Cathedral by knights loyal to the king. Thomas I is remembered as a saint and symbol of the church's independence and authority. His story highlights the complex relationship between church and state during medieval times.
