Thomas Cech

Thomas Cech is a biochemist who discovered that RNA molecules can act as catalysts, meaning they can speed up chemical reactions directly, much like enzymes do. This was groundbreaking because it challenged the prior belief that only proteins had this ability. His work revealed that RNA not only carries genetic information but also has an active role in biochemical processes. This discovery helped us better understand the origins of life and the functioning of cells. In recognition of his contributions, Cech was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1989.
