Thomas A. Jaggar

Thomas A. Jaggar was a pioneering volcanologist who advanced the scientific study of volcanoes. He founded the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory in 1912, where he developed innovative methods to monitor volcanic activity, helping to better understand eruption behaviors and risks. His work significantly contributed to both the scientific knowledge of volcanoes and the development of volcanic hazard assessment and monitoring techniques. Jaggar’s efforts improved safety for those living near active volcanoes and laid the groundwork for modern volcanology practices.
