Third Gate Theory
The Third Gate Theory suggests that the brain uses specific "gates" to filter and regulate emotional responses. The first gate filters sensory information, and the second gate manages emotional reactions. The third gate, located in the brain's prefrontal cortex, acts as a higher-level control system, allowing us to consciously choose how to respond rather than reacting automatically. This process helps in managing intense emotions, promoting calmness and rational decision-making. Essentially, the third gate enables us to pause and assess situations, leading to more thoughtful, controlled behavior even in stressful or emotional circumstances.
