Therapeutic use of radioiodine

Radioiodine therapy uses a special form of radioactive iodine to treat certain thyroid conditions, such as hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer. The radioactive iodine is taken orally, usually in a capsule or liquid. Because the thyroid gland naturally absorbs iodine, the radioactive part concentrates there, delivering targeted radiation. This radiation destroys overactive or cancerous thyroid tissue while minimizing impact on the rest of the body. The treatment is usually effective with minimal side effects, allowing the thyroid to heal or reducing its size and activity, ultimately helping to restore normal thyroid function or eliminate cancer.
