Therapeutic Plasma Exchange
Therapeutic Plasma Exchange (TPE) is a medical procedure that removes harmful substances from a person's blood. In TPE, blood is taken from a patient and processed to separate the plasma—the liquid part of blood—from its cells. The plasma, which may contain toxins, antibodies, or disease-causing substances, is discarded and replaced with a sterile solution, such as saline or donor plasma. After the plasma is replaced, the treated blood is returned to the patient. This treatment is used to manage various conditions, including autoimmune diseases and some neurological disorders, helping to alleviate symptoms and improve health.
