Theories of cultural hegemony
Theories of cultural hegemony, mainly developed by Antonio Gramsci, suggest that the dominant social group maintains control not just through force or laws, but by shaping the beliefs, values, and norms of society. They create a "cultural consensus" that makes their rule appear natural and accepted. This process influences what people see as normal or right, allowing the ruling class to hold power with less resistance. Essentially, societal dominance is sustained through cultural ideas, rather than only through laws or economic power, making it easier for ruling groups to stay in control.
