Theatrical Mask

A theatrical mask is a symbol used in theater to represent a character's identity, emotions, or role. Historically, masks have been employed to amplify expressions, create archetypes, or disguise the actor’s own face, allowing for transformation and heightened storytelling. They can be elaborate or minimal, made from materials like papier-mâché, fabric, or latex. Masks help audiences instantly recognize characters, convey mood, and establish a certain cultural or symbolic context. While rooted in tradition, modern theater sometimes uses masks creatively to explore themes, evoke mystery, or visually emphasize character distinctions.
