the X-15

The X-15 was a rocket-powered aircraft developed by NASA and the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s and 1960s to explore high-speed, high-altitude flight. It could reach speeds over 4,500 miles per hour (Mach 6.7) and fly above 50 miles in altitude, nearing space. Designed for research, it collected data on aerodynamics, re-entry, and human endurance under extreme conditions, helping shape future spacecraft and space exploration. The X-15 was launched from a mothership and piloted by experienced pilots, pushing the limits of aviation technology and knowledge.
