The Whig Party

The Whig Party was a political group in the United States active primarily in the 1830s and 1840s. They opposed President Andrew Jackson and his Democratic Party, favoring a stronger federal government, internal improvements like infrastructure, and policies that supported industrial growth and modernization. The party included diverse factions, from reform-minded individuals to business interests. Ultimately, the Whigs declined in the 1850s due to internal disagreements over issues like slavery and the expansion of territories, leading to their breakup and the rise of new political parties, including the Republicans.
