The Watergate Tapes
The Watergate Tapes were audio recordings made by President Richard Nixon’s administration, capturing conversations that revealed efforts to cover up the break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972. When investigators sought these tapes, Nixon initially refused, citing executive privilege. However, the Supreme Court ruled he had to release them. The tapes exposed evidence of presidential involvement in the cover-up, leading to widespread scandal. As a result, Nixon resigned in 1974 to avoid impeachment, making the tapes a key factor in uncovering corruption at the highest levels of government and strengthening demands for transparency and accountability.
