The War of Jenkins' Ear
The War of Jenkins' Ear (1739-1748) was a conflict between Britain and Spain primarily over trade and territorial disputes in the Caribbean and Florida. It was sparked when a British sailor, Robert Jenkins, had his ear cut off by Spanish authorities, which became a symbol of Spanish aggression. The incident heightened tensions, leading to hostilities that merged into the larger War of Austrian Succession. The war included naval battles and invasions, ultimately emphasizing ongoing conflicts over global trade dominance and colonial rights. It ended with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, returning some territories but leaving underlying tensions unresolved.
