The Walled City of Kowloon
The Walled City of Kowloon was a densely populated, largely ungoverned settlement in Hong Kong that existed from the late 19th century until its demolition in 1993. Known for its labyrinthine layout, it had narrow alleyways, tightly packed buildings, and was notorious for informal businesses, including unregulated clinics and shops. Despite its chaos, residents created a vibrant community with strong social bonds. Lacking formal government control, it attracted various illicit activities. The city was dismantled and replaced with Kowloon City Park, but it remains a symbol of urban resilience and uncontrolled development.
