The Underground Railroad

The Underground Railroad was a secret network of pathways, individuals, and safe houses used in the 19th century to help enslaved African Americans escape from the southern United States to freedom in the North and Canada. It operated covertly, with "conductors" guiding escapees and "locals" providing shelter and aid, often at great personal risk. Though not a physical railroad, it symbolized a collective effort to challenge slavery and promote liberty.
