The UBI Experiment in Finland

The Finnish UBI experiment, conducted from 2017 to 2018, tested providing a basic income of €560 monthly to 2,000 unemployed individuals, regardless of whether they found work. The goal was to see if unconditional payments could improve well-being and employment incentives. Results showed participants experienced better mental health, reduced stress, and increased life satisfaction. However, there was little impact on employment levels. The experiment offered valuable insights into how unconditional income might support social and economic well-being but indicated it may not significantly boost job-seeking behavior without additional support measures.
