The Tong Wars

The Tong Wars were violent conflicts among Chinese-American secret societies, called Tongs, in early 20th-century Chinatowns, especially in San Francisco. These rival groups fought over power, territory, and control of illegal activities like gambling and drug trafficking. The battles involved shootings, stabbings, and intimidation, often reflecting deeper social, economic, and ethnic tensions, as Chinese immigrants faced discrimination. Law enforcement efforts eventually suppressed the violence, but the wars left a lasting impact on Chinatown communities and highlighted the challenges faced by immigrant groups seeking safety and prosperity.
