The Timpani

The timpani, also known as kettledrums, are large, bowl-shaped percussion instruments that produce tonal pitches when struck with mallets. They typically come in sets with different sizes, each tuned to a specific note, allowing performers to play melodies or harmony. Timpani are usually made of copper or fiberglass and have a skin or synthetic head stretched over a frame. They are widely used in orchestras to provide rhythmic foundation and dramatic emphasis, capable of creating a range of dynamics and timbres from soft, gentle sounds to powerful, commanding tones.
