The TATA Box
The TATA box is a specific DNA sequence located near the start of many genes in eukaryotic organisms. It acts as a signaling region that helps the cell's machinery recognize where to begin copying the gene into messenger RNA (mRNA). This sequence, rich in thymine (T) and adenine (A) bases, attracts proteins called transcription factors and RNA polymerase, which work together to initiate gene transcription. Essentially, the TATA box functions as a molecular "landing pad," ensuring that gene activation starts at the correct position, facilitating proper gene expression.
