The Standardbred Horse

The Standardbred horse is a breed known for its ability to race both harnessed and at a trot or pace. Developed in North America, these horses are characterized by their stamina, strength, and smooth gait, making them ideal for harness racing. They typically stand 14 to 17 hands tall and weigh around 950 to 1,200 pounds. Unlike thoroughbreds, Standardbreds are trained to move at a consistent pace, either trotting or pacing, often pulling a sulky (a lightweight cart). Their calm demeanor and reliable performance make them popular in racing, pleasure riding, and breeding.
