The Stages of Moral Development
The stages of moral development, proposed by psychologist Lawrence Kohlberg, illustrate how individuals evolve in their understanding of morality. There are three main levels: 1. **Pre-conventional**: Morality is based on personal interests and the consequences of actions. 2. **Conventional**: Individuals adhere to societal rules and the expectations of authority, focusing on maintaining relationships and order. 3. **Post-conventional**: People develop their own moral principles, valuing justice and human rights, sometimes challenging societal norms in pursuit of these ideals. Each stage represents a more complex understanding of morality and ethical considerations.
