The Spoils System

The Spoils System is a practice where government jobs and appointments are awarded based on political loyalty rather than merit. When a new political party takes power, it often replaces many officials with supporters from their party to ensure loyalty. This system was common in 19th-century America but led to inefficiency and corruption because jobs weren't always given to the most qualified individuals. Over time, reforms were implemented to promote competency and reduce political favoritism in federal employment.
