The Spleen as an organ

The spleen is an organ located in the upper left side of the abdomen, near the stomach. It plays a vital role in the immune system by producing and storing white blood cells that help fight infections. Additionally, the spleen filters blood, removing old or damaged red blood cells and recycling their iron. It also acts as a blood reservoir, storing extra blood that can be released into the circulation if needed. While not essential for survival, the spleen supports immune health and blood maintenance, functioning seamlessly as part of the body's adaptive defense and circulatory systems.
