The Space Transportation System (STS)

The Space Transportation System (STS), commonly known as the Space Shuttle, was NASA's spacecraft used from 1981 to 2011 for human spaceflight. It was designed to carry astronauts and cargo to space, including the International Space Station, satellites, and scientific instruments. The shuttle looked like a large plane with wings, featuring a reusable orbiter, solid rocket boosters, and an external fuel tank. After launch, the solid rocket boosters would fall away, and the orbiter would land like an airplane upon return. The STS revolutionized space access by providing a versatile, reusable vehicle for various missions over three decades.
