Social Exchange Theory posits that human relationships are formed and maintained based on a cost-benefit analysis. Individuals weigh the rewards (like support, affection, and resources) against the costs (such as time, effort, and emotional strain) associated with a relationship. The theory suggests that people seek to maximize their benefits while minimizing their costs. Successful relationships are generally those where the perceived rewards exceed the costs, leading to satisfaction and commitment. Conversely, when the costs outweigh the benefits, individuals may reconsider their involvement in the relationship.
