The Smith Commission
The Smith Commission was established in 2014 to address the devolution of powers to Scotland following the 2014 independence referendum. Its goal was to define which responsibilities, such as welfare, taxation, and justice, should be transferred from the UK Parliament to the Scottish Parliament. The commission brought together political leaders from different parties to negotiate and reach an agreement that would give Scotland greater control over certain areas while remaining part of the UK. The resulting frameworks aimed to strengthen Scottish self-governance and clarify the division of powers between the UK and Scottish governments.
