The Skye Bridge
The Skye Bridge is a toll bridge connecting the Isle of Skye to mainland Scotland, spanning the Sound of Sleat. Opened in 1995, it replaced a ferry service and significantly improved access to Skye. The bridge consists of both a concrete viaduct and a steel suspension span, facilitating smoother travel. Initially, tolls were used to recover construction costs, but these faced public opposition and legal challenges. After legal settlements, tolls were abolished in 2004, making access free. The bridge now serves as a vital route for residents, tourists, and commerce, enhancing connectivity and economic growth for the region.
