The Siege of Breda
The Siege of Breda took place from 1624 to 1625 during the Eighty Years’ War, when Spanish forces besieged the Dutch-held city of Breda in the Netherlands. The Dutch defenders, led by Justus van Sack, endured a harsh blockade and artillery attacks. Despite shortages, they resisted the lengthy siege. Eventually, the Dutch surrendered, and the city was taken over by Spain. The event highlighted the brutal nature of early modern warfare and the strategic importance of Breda as a key fortress. It also became famous through the painting "The Siege of Breda" by Diego Velázquez, which captures the dramatic moment of surrender.
