the Sepoy Mutiny

The Sepoy Mutiny, also known as the Indian Rebellion of 1857, was a major uprising against British rule in India. Indian soldiers (sepoys) in the British East India Company's army revolted due to grievances like cultural insensitivity, firearm cartridge issues tainted with cow and pig fat, and overall frustration with British control. The rebellion spread across northern India, challenging British authority for over a year. Although eventually suppressed, it marked a turning point, leading to direct British government rule over India, ending the dominance of the East India Company.
