The Sense of Community Theory

The Sense of Community Theory explains how and why people feel connected, valued, and engaged within a group or place. It emphasizes four key elements: membership (belonging), influence (feeling you can make a difference), integration and fulfillment of needs (rewards from participation), and shared emotional connection (bonding through shared experiences). When these elements are strong, individuals develop a sense of belonging and become more committed to their community, which promotes social support, cooperation, and overall well-being. This theory helps us understand what makes communities vibrant, resilient, and meaningful for their members.
