The Sedimentary Cycle
The sedimentary cycle is the natural process by which sediments—small particles of rock, minerals, and organic material—are formed, transported, deposited, and eventually become solid rock. It begins with weathering and erosion, breaking down existing rocks into sediments. These sediments are then carried by water, wind, or ice to new locations where they settle and accumulate in layers. Over time, pressure and mineralcementing turn these layers into sedimentary rocks. This cycle continues over millions of years, shaping landscapes and forming important natural resources like coal, sandstone, and limestone.
