The Seanad
The Seanad is the upper house of Ireland’s national parliament, known as the Oireachtas. It reviews and revises legislation approved by the lower house, the Dáil. Members of the Seanad, called Senators, are selected through a mix of appointments and elections, representing various groups and sectors. Its purpose is to provide additional scrutiny, expert insights, and diverse perspectives on laws, helping to refine and improve legislation before it becomes law. The Seanad plays an important role in Ireland’s legislative process, functioning as a revising chamber that supports balanced and comprehensive law-making.
