The Sea Ventures
The Sea Venture was a ship built in the early 17th century, most notably used by English settlers attempting to colonize North America. In 1609, it was bound for Jamestown but was wrecked in a hurricane off Bermuda. The ship and its crew became stranded there for several months, during which they survived and helped establish the first English colony in Bermuda. The experiences on the Sea Venture are considered a pivotal event, influencing later English colonization efforts and inspiring the famous Shakespearean play "The Tempest." It symbolizes resilience and the challenges of early transatlantic exploration.
