The Sea of Serenity
The Sea of Serenity, or Mare Serenitatis, is a large, darkly shaded plain on the Moon's surface formed by ancient lava flows. It is one of the lunar Maria, broad basaltic plains that appear dark to us and contrast with the lighter highlands. Located in the Moon's northern hemisphere, it spans approximately 400 kilometers across. This area was created when volcanic activity filled a large impact basin with molten rock, cooling and solidifying over billions of years. Today, it’s a notable feature for scientists studying lunar geology and has been the landing site for lunar missions.
