The SAFE strategy
The SAFE strategy is a comprehensive approach to eliminate trachoma, a bacterial eye infection that can cause blindness. It stands for Surgery, Antibiotics, Facial cleanliness, and Environmental improvements. Surgery helps treat advanced cases with eyelid deformities. Antibiotics, like antibiotics, clear the infection and reduce spread. Promoting facial cleanliness removes dirt and bacteria, lowering infection risk. Environmental improvements, such as access to clean water and sanitation, help prevent transmission by reducing mosquito breeding and contaminated water sources. Together, these measures work to reduce disease prevalence and prevent further cases, supporting long-term eye health in affected communities.
