The Rumsfeld Matrix

The Rumsfeld Matrix is a tool that helps organizations identify and categorize risks based on whether they are known or unknown. It has four parts: Known Known (risks we are aware of), Known Unknown (risks we are aware of but uncertain about), Unknown Known (risks we might unknowingly understand), and Unknown Unknown (risks we don’t know at all). This framework helps leaders prioritize risk management efforts by clarifying which areas are understood and which need more research or vigilance, ultimately aiding in better decision-making under uncertainty.
