The Rise of Autocracy

The rise of autocracy refers to the process where a single leader or small group gains concentrated power, reducing or eliminating checks and balances such as democratic institutions or free elections. This often happens through political instability, economic hardship, or social unrest, which leaders exploit to justify increased authority. As power centralizes, autocratic rulers often control the media, suppress opposition, and make decisions without public input. This shift can undermine democratic principles, concentrate authority in the hands of one individual or a ruling elite, and lead to less political freedom and accountability.
