The Riot Act

The Riot Act, enacted in 1714, was a UK law that allowed authorities to disperse large groups engaged in unruly or violent behavior. If a gathering of over twelve people was suspected of causing a disturbance, officials could read a specific proclamation requiring them to disperse within an hour. Failure to comply could lead to arrest and punishment. The law aimed to maintain public order but was often criticized for its broad authority and potential for abuse. It remained in effect until 1973, when modern legislation replaced it with more specific and updated laws addressing public disturbances.
