The Right to Property (India)

The Right to Property in India is a fundamental right that historically allowed citizens to acquire, hold, and dispose of private property freely. However, through constitutional amendments, particularly the 44th Amendment in 1978, this right was curtailed from being a fundamental right to a legal right, meaning the government can now regulate or acquire property for public purposes with compensation. Essentially, individuals still have the right to own property, but the state has certain powers to control or take over property for societal benefit, subject to legal procedures and compensation.
