The Real ID Act

The Real ID Act is a U.S. law that sets standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards to improve security. Starting May 7, 2025, these IDs will be required to board domestic flights, enter federal buildings, and access certain secure areas. To get a compliant Real ID, individuals must provide proof of identity, proof of lawful status, social security number, and proof of address. The goal is to enhance national security by reducing identity fraud and ensuring that IDs are more reliable and standardized across states.
