The Raj (British rule in India)
The Raj refers to British rule over India from 1858 to 1947, after India was formally taken over from the British East India Company. During this period, the British government controlled India's political, economic, and military affairs, often prioritizing British interests. India was considered the "jewel in the crown" of the British Empire due to its resources and strategic importance. The period saw modernization efforts, but also exploitation and social disruption. Indian independence movements grew over time, culminating in India gaining independence in 1947, ending nearly a century of direct British governance.
