The Ragged School Union

The Ragged School Union was an organization established in the 19th century to support and coordinate charitable schools that aimed to provide free or affordable education to impoverished children. These schools focused on basic literacy, numeracy, and moral instruction, helping disadvantaged youngsters access learning opportunities they might not otherwise receive. The Union helped standardize efforts, improve teacher training, and advocate for social reform, playing a significant role in expanding educational access during the Industrial Revolution. Through collective efforts, it contributed to reducing child poverty and promoting social mobility.
