The Quebec Referendum

The Quebec Referendum was a vote held in 1995 where residents of Quebec decided whether to pursue independence from Canada. The central question asked if Quebec should become a sovereign nation, with or without a new economic agreement. The referendum was a response to long-standing debates over Quebec's cultural and political identity. The result was very close—about 50.6% voted to stay in Canada, and 49.4% voted for independence—highlighting deep divisions within the province. Although the "No" option won, the vote underscored ongoing tensions and discussions about Quebec's autonomy and relationship with the rest of Canada.
