The Public Land Survey System (PLSS)

The Public Land Survey System (PLSS) is a method used in the United States to divide and describe land parcels. It divides land into big square areas called "townships," which are six miles on each side. These townships are further divided into 36 smaller squares called "sections," each one mile square. The system provides a standardized way to identify and locate land parcels, making land transactions, ownership, and management more organized and efficient across many states. Essentially, it’s a detailed map grid to help locate and describe land parcels accurately.
