The Prairie

The prairie is a vast expanse of flat or gently rolling land characterized mainly by tall grasses, wildflowers, and few trees. It is a natural grassland ecosystem found predominantly in the central parts of North America. Prairies support diverse plant and animal species adapted to the open environment and periodic droughts. Historically, they covered millions of acres, serving as important farming lands and wildlife habitats. Today, prairies are valued for their ecological importance, including soil health, biodiversity, and carbon storage. Despite extensive agriculture and development, efforts are ongoing to conserve and restore prairie ecosystems.
