The Pilgrimage of Grace

The Pilgrimage of Grace was a large, widespread uprising in Northern England in 1536, driven by protests against King Henry VIII’s religious reforms and dissolution of monasteries. Peasants, farmers, and clergy united to oppose the loss of religious institutions and economic hardships caused by the government’s policies. The rebellion reflected tensions between traditional Catholic beliefs and the king’s move towards Protestantism. Although initially peaceful, it turned violent, and the government suppressed the uprising. The revolt highlighted widespread dissatisfaction with Henry VIII's reforms, and its suppression strengthened royal authority but also exposed deep societal divisions.
