The Photo League

The Photo League was a group of photographers active in New York City from 1936 to 1951, dedicated to making photography socially and artistically meaningful. They believed images could highlight social issues, depict everyday life, and inspire change. Members included both professional and amateur photographers who shared ideas through exhibitions, classes, and publications. The League aimed to elevate photography as an art form while documenting real-life struggles during the Great Depression and pre-World War II era. Its work influenced photojournalism and helped foster a greater appreciation for socially conscious photography.
