The People's Temple

The People's Temple was a religious and social organization founded in the 1950s by Jim Jones, promoting progressive ideals and community support. Initially focused on racial integration, it attracted diverse members. However, in the 1970s, the group relocated to Guyana, establishing a commune called Jonestown. Under Jones's control, the community ended in tragedy in 1978 when over 900 members died in a mass murder-suicide. The People's Temple is remembered as a cautionary example of charismatic leadership and how it can manipulate followers into dangerous actions.
