The Panjshir Campaign
The Panjshir Campaign refers to a series of military conflicts in 2021 involving Taliban forces attempting to take control of Panjshir Valley in Afghanistan. The valley has historically been resistant to external control due to its rugged terrain and strategic importance. A coalition of Afghan resistance groups, led by the former vice president Ahmad Massoud, mounted a defense against the Taliban’s advances. The campaign drew international attention as it became a symbol of ongoing resistance to Taliban rule. Ultimately, the Taliban captured Panjshir, but the fighting highlighted continued Afghan opposition and unrest following their return to power.
