The Palermo Protocol

The Palermo Protocol, officially known as the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons, especially Women and Children, was adopted in 2000 as part of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. Its main goal is to combat human trafficking by encouraging countries to enhance their laws and cooperation to prevent trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute offenders. The Protocol emphasizes the importance of addressing the root causes of trafficking and ensuring that victims receive appropriate support and protection, recognizing their rights and dignity in the process.
